Kibbutz Buber Seeking Summer Staff

Am Kolel Renewal Community seeks staff for Kibbutz Buber, a groundbreaking pioneering program for Jewish teenagers!

In our 11th summer, Am Kolel’s Kibbutz Buber is located in the Agricultural Reserve of Montgomery County, Maryland.

Named for philosopher Martin Buber, we offer two weeks of a deep collective and earth based experience for up to 16 teenagers. The program includes daily contemplative practices, gardening, studies in Jewish thought, environmental issues and leadership skills training.

Candidates must have experience working with teenagers, love gardening, be familiar with Jewish environmental teachings. We’re also seeking staff with excellent arts/music backgrounds.

Kibbutz Buber is from July 21- August 3. Directed by Rabbi David Shneyer, Am Kolel is a Jewish Renewal Community. Kibbutz Buber is located at our Sanctuary Retreat Center. Please visit our web sites.

I am currently in touch with Rabbi Elisa Klapheck of the German Renewal Community in Frankfurt / Germany ( http://minjan-ffm.de/ ) as an aspirant to become a member of Am Israel.

I have experience working with teenagers in the Berlin Community, love gardening & I am familiar with Jewish teachings. Also being involved in enviromental issues over here in Germany. I have a family background of arts and music, my father (ז״ל ) having been a musician.

My aspiration to convert dates back to 1987/1988 when during the first Intifada I spent 2 years working on Kibbutz Nir’Am outside Sderot and just a mile from Gaza city. Before that, attending the “Diltheyschule” in Wiesbaden / Germany (at about the same time as Chazan Daniel Kempin, who is currently taking part in the Philadelphia ordination programm) I took lessons in biblical Hebrew, so when I got to HaArez I could at least read and write Iwrith.

After 12 years in Berlin I have recently returned to my hometown Wiesbaden. In Berlin I was attached to and attending services to and with the orthodox Rabbi Ehrenberg and liberal / reform Rabbi Nachama. Ehrenberg’s assistant, Dana Bairamov (Youth Leader of the Jewish Community / Director Am Echad – National Outreach Lauder Yeshurun in Berlin then: http://www.roicommunity.org/users/dana-bairamov ) pointed me to the writings of Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo – and so did Rabbi Nachama with “Paradigm Shift” by Rabbi Schachter-Shalomi, who ordined him in 2000. Since then – having experienced most different denominations and directions of Judaism – I am more and more drawn to the Renewal Movement (“fully embracing a contemporary egalitarian Judaism as a profound spiritual practice and social transformer, reaching beyond denominational boundaries and institutional structures”) – my latest contact – via Aleph – being Ariel Root Wolpe and her “Concept of God”: http://arielwolpe.com/blog/2013/12/15/my-concept-of-god .
