Prays Well With Others

In grade school the good sisters taught us well
That all the non-Catholics were headed for Hell
They didn’t know the water flows in every well
They couldn’t pray well with others!

Three great streams flowed from Avraham
Judaism, Christianity and Islam
Different dates from one tall palm
They oughta pray well with others

T’fillin, rosaries, prayer beads and pipes
Yarmulkes and miters, vestments so bright
Bells and holy water, candles to light
A thousand ways to say Ah-meyn! Ah-men! Ay-men!

Reb Zalman noticed a curious thing
Buddhists bow to the Void, Jews praise the King of Kings
In the next world, it’s all the same thing
So let’s pray well with others!

Sufis are all like spinning around
Hassids are dancing, jumping up and down
Some praise with silence, some with Holy Sound!
Let’s pray well with others!

El and Allah, Brahman, Christ
Zeus, Jehovah, Wakan Tanka is nice
Odin got rid of those giants of ice
A thousand ways to say Ah-meyn! Ah-men! Ay-men!

Confucian Ren is like the Jewish Mensch
There’s room for us all on G!D’s long bench
One Holy Thirst, many ways to quench
Let’s pray well with others!

Crossing the bridge with Martin Luther King
Priests and rabbis, monks, imams and everything
Justice demands the same damn thing
Let’s pray well with others!

7 directions, 7 sacraments, too
7 circles at a wedding for Hindu and Jew
70 faces of You-Know-Who
And a thousand ways to say Ah-meyn! Ah-men! Ay-men!

Rumi says drink the wine, not the cup
Some folks meditate on whatever’s up
One way to get enlightened, sit down and shut up!
Let’s pray well with others!

G!D all the same when you get close up!

Let’s pray well with others! 3x
